Skip is having a crisis when it comes to the NHL, the success of the Vegas Golden Knights has him wondering if he knows how to evaluate hockey anymore.
In the NFL Skip has declared that Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson are the future of the league while Josh continues to throw shade at Kirk Cousins. The guys share some experiences from their fantasy football seasons and even talk a little NCAA football.
Recorded Oct 23, 2017. Skip and Josh are up early to discuss the MLB playoffs, the week in the NFL as well as the Habs and Leafs; two teams going in opposite directions.
In Baseball the Astros and Yankees treated us to a great series. Why was the home field so important? Who will the guys cheer for in the World Series? Josh has some unsent texts that he would like to share. Skip can’t pronounce Keuchel. There is some Astros nostalgia and of course the topic of Kate Upton does come up.
In the NFL, Josh is wondering how there can be three shutouts in one week. Skip is not sure if Cam Newton is any good. The SuperBowl rematch wasn’t really great and Skip tries to get into the minds of Giant and Jets fans.
Meanwhile in Montreal, the guys look at best and worst case scenarios for the Habs, whose fans are in full panic mode. In Toronto the Leafs may have lost to the Senators but their fans are still really positive about the team’s chances this season.
Recorded Oct 15, 2017. Skip and Josh recap a very unpredictable week 6 in the NFL and also give their thoughts on the start of the NHL season. In the NFL the Packers title hopes came to a sudden end with the devastating injury to Aaron Rodgers. Josh can’t believe that no one seems to know the rules about what counts as a touchdown these days. The Eagles are for real which means happy times at Skip’s house.
In the NHL the Leafs are off to a hot start seemingly scoring at will while the Habs can’t seem to score at all. Can Carey Price turn things around in Montreal? How good can Austin Matthews become in Toronto?
Recorded Oct 13, 2017. The MLB division series are over and Josh is fired up. Do any mangers actually know how to handle a pitching staff? Why do these games start so late and take so long? Skip is questioning himself about the importance of the pitching match ups and also wondering if any players today know the fundamentals of baseball. Josh tries to console Nats fans and declares that the Washington-Montreal franchise is cursed. The guys also get a bit philosophical.
Recorded Oct 1, 2017. This was supposed to be a baseball playoff preview but what it became was actually a kind of look into the minds of two huge fans and what strange and often random factors make them root for one team over another. The grammar police are back and MLB has decreed that the playoffs be called POSTSEASON 2017. Skip declares his love for playoff baseball while Josh makes a pretty good case in favor of the wildcard format. The guys figured out that there are a few good reasons to cheer for a team: nice uniforms, if you like the fiancé of one of the players and usually if the team is an underdog. There are also reasons not to cheer for a team like ugly uniforms, bad time zones, if a players is a jerk or if you dislike a manager for something he might have done thirty five years ago. They guys ask some big questions: Can a wildcard team go all the way? Will the Nationals bullpen hold up? Are the Red Sox for real? Can the Cubs repeat? Can the Dodgers finally make some noise in the playoffs and can anyone stop the Indians? There’s also a cool promo for some indy podcast friends.
Recorded Sep 30, 2017. Skip and Josh preview the upcoming NHL season with none other than hockey writer David Alter who has been a contributor on The Fan 590, Sportsnet, MapleLeafs.com, National Post & The Athletic. The Leafs have big expectations this year in Toronto and David breaks down the goaltending situation, how the defencemen stack up, the progression of all the young stars and the acquisition of Patrick Marleau. Elsewhere in the Atlantic division: How will the Habs do this season? Are they better or worse than last year? Do they have enough depth on the blueline? How will Jonathan Drouin fit in? And are Habs fans destined for another season of solely relying on Carey Price? The guys discuss the contenders and pretenders in the Metropolitan division where the Penguins are still the team to beat. In the Western conference, can Connor McDavid and the Oilers contend? Can the Predators make it back to the finals? David also has a pretty radical idea about how to change the playoff format which is something that Skip and Josh fully endorse.
Recorded Sep 26, 2017. In this episode Skip and Josh recap week three of the NFL season. Skip starts the show by explaining why the guys will not discuss anything related to anthems, taking a knee or politics in general. It was a bad week for the favorites and the NFL finally surprised everyone with some shocking results. The Eagles needed a miracle to beat the Giants despite all their injuries. The Falcons and Chiefs are the lone undefeated teams left, can they both win next week? The Lions got hosed, big time! The Bears, Bills, and Jaguars all pulled off big upsets while the Browns, 49ers and Bengals continue to find ways to lose. Skip has something that’s really bugging him, while Josh is in search of a QB for his Fantasy team.
Recorded Sept 9, 2017. The guys each came prepared with four things to discuss that grabbed their attention in the past week. Could Josh’s day be ruined because of a podcast? What’s the early verdict on the return of Jay and Dan to TSN? Why were the television ratings so poor for the NFL season opener? What are some of the new options for watching the NFL for Canadian viewers? Baseball is about to break a homerun record, why is no one talking about it? Recorded Aug 16, 2017. Skip is back from vacation and the guys catch up after not having spoken for over a week. Josh actually read a book and also feels compelled to correct some things he said in the last couple of episodes. Eventually the conversation turns to sports, specifically baseball where the guys ask: Does it always make sense to acquire players at the deadline? How good are the Dodgers? Can anyone take Giancarlo Stanton’s contract? Are all new records and great performances now in doubt because of potential PEDs? Is there such a thing as the curse of the homerun derby? How awesome is Bryce Harper’s hair? How exactly did the guys decide who’s name came first in the show title?
